As a thriving spa town, Baden had a growing Jewish community from the second half of the 19th century, becoming the third largest in Austria by 1938. Thereafter, until 1945, the community experienced the catastrophic effects of the Anschluss and the Second World War. After the Second World War a new Jewish community was established, which now is the only one in Lower Austria. The synagogue, built by the Stadtbaumeister and Bürgermeister Franz Breyer, dates from 1872. Although the interior was devastated in 1938 the building survived, despite the Soviet occupation. It was only in 2004 that the fine building could be finally reconditioned and was brought back into use in 2005.
