A simple wooden Summer theatre, without a roof, existed on the site of the Sommerarena from 1841 until 1905 when the city council decided to have an all weather theatre built in its place. The project was given to the architect Rudolf Krausz who designed a cast iron framed building. The building was completed in record time between 20th February and 15th June 1906. performances were interrupted by the second World War and its aftermath but the theatre was once again opened on 29th June 1957. The unique architectural feature of the building is its opening and closing glass roof which gives the feeling of an outdoor theatre when the weather permits.
