Willendorf, which has continuous stratified deposits laid down between 40,000 and 23,000 BC, is probably the most famous Paleolithic site in Central Europe. The museum in the village is dedicated to exhibiting the finds from the archaeological excavations and documenting Stone Age history and environment. The most famous find, the Venus of Willendorf, was uncovered in 1908 during the construction of the railway. It is an 11 centimetre high status of a naked woman carved from limestone, probably a fertility symbol.
