The Friedensdenkmäler is a memorial commemorating the end of the Second World War and also celebrating lasting peace and international co-operation. Erlauf is adjacent to the federal highway on which thousands of refugees made their way to the west ahead of the advancing Soviet forces. America troops of the 65th Infantry, under General Reinhard, and Soviets troops of the 7th Paratroopers, under General Dritschkin, celebrated the end of the war here at midnight on 8th May 1945. The memorial stands on the site of the house which was occupied by the senior officers of both armies.
