Construction of the Schwarzenbergischer Schwemmkanal was begun in 1789 with the purpose of allowing timber to be transported by flotation from southern Bohemia to Vienna via the Mühl River. The canal, which was designed by the engineer Josef Rosenauer, 1735-1804, is over fifty kilometres long and was in commercial use until 1916, although, by this time, only a short section was still in use. Nowadays the Schwemmkanal provides a cultural connection between the Austrian and Czech peoples and is especially popular for its cycle way which runs along its length.
