Hartheim Castle is now a memorial site dedicated to the thousands of physically and mentally handicapped persons who were murdered here by the Nazis as part of the euthanasia programme from 1940 until the end of the war. After the war, the building was converted into apartments. The gas chamber was open to visitors, beginning in 1969, but the building was closed in 1999 when construction of the Memorial Site was started after formation of the "Verein Schloss Hartheim", with the objective of dpocumenting the history of the euthanasia programme at Hartheim, and finding an adequate use for the castle.
