The Rudolfsturm, which has superb views of Hallstatt and the surrounding mountains, is part of a ruined castle built in the years 1282 to1284 by Duke Albrecht I to protect the town from the threat of takeover by the Prince-Bishops of Salzburg. The tower is named after the first Habsburg, Rudolf I. Nowadays, the building accommodates a café and restaurant and has an observation deck. It is conveniently situated adjacent to the Salzbergbahn station and from here you can take one of a number of walks to see some of the local sights.
