The ruins of the 12th century Röthelstein fortress lie in a commanding position overlooking the Danube about two kilometres downstream of Hainburg. It was from this stronghold that the von Röthelstein clan controlled their considerable possessions, fishing grounds and trade on the Danube. As a consequence of feuds and private wars, the castle was abandoned in the second half of the 15th century and subsequently razed by the Turks. From the late 16th century the castle was used as a local source of building materials. Today all that remains to be seen are vestiges of the outer wall and the palace wall. All the same it is well worth a visit for the wonderful views.
