The church and monastery of Mariahilf in Gutenstein is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Lower Austria. The buildings are surrounded by gardens containing pictures and statues of the Virgin Mary chapels, grottos and caves. The master gardener Demeter Galizin created the landscape around 1786 by combining artificial elements with the beautiful natural surroundings in the style of an 18th century English garden. There is a choice of walks through the garden which take in the coniferous and deciduous forest and the spectacularly rugged scenery.
