The small or red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is sometimes called the cat bear because it washes itself like a cat. They occur in the wild at the southern edge of the Himalayas from Nepal to the Chinese provinces of Yuehnan and Szetschuan. In some areas of southwest China the creature is hunted for its skin to make hats, for example. Since 1996 the animal has been classified as highly endangered. Two of these rare pandas, Chiga and Chinocco, are to be found in the Kurpark in Gars where visitors can see them in a simulated natural environment.
