The Hallstätter Gräberfeld is an ancient burial ground dating from 800 to 500 years BC, the Hallstattzeit. Here the remains of approximately 4000 people were first discovered, in 1846, by Johann Georg Ramsauer, the salt works manager, who recognised the form of a cemetery on the site. By 1863 980 graves had been excavated and documented graphically by Ramsauer. His finds are now in the Hallstatt museum alongside those of later excavations. The artifacts recovered from the graves, for example bronze tableware, glassware, weapons and amber, indicate that Hallstatt was once extremely prosperous.
