The Armenhaus in Amtsgasse was built in 1801 and served as a place of refuge for destitute and sick citizens of Hollabrunn. It was elevated to the status of a health institution in 1826 and was extended in 1839. At this time the establishment had only about ten beds but it wasn’t until 1873 that the new Kaiser Franz Josef – Hospital was built to replace it. In the house, which is currently used as Hollabrunn’s notary’s office, visitors can see a Schwarze Kuchl, a windowless room with a hearth, from the time when it served as a poor house.
