The Black Death raged in Ardagger in the years 1712 to 1713 and 1679 to 1680 as it did in much of Europe. The total number of victims in Ardagger is unknown but it is estimated to be at least half of the population. In memory of the terrible times a chapel, the Pestkapelle, was erected in the market place. The chapel’s Baroque votive painting shows the Holy Trinity and the three saints Sebastian, Rochus and Rosalia. Nearby there is an early Baroque Pestsäule, or plague column, which probably predates the chapel, having been constructed some time about 1679.
