In 1661 Gutensteiner Sebastian Schlager attached a picture of the Virgin Mary to a beech tree, which initiated a series of miraculous events. As a result a tradition of religious fairs began on the site where clergymen recorded the miracles in a Mirakelbuch. Eventually a church was built here, the first pilgrimage church, and, as a result of a catastrophic fire was replaced by the present Baroque building between 1710 and 1721. The interior of the church houses a number of artistic jewels, for example the side altars and, in particular, the high altar.
