The Pasterze, approximately 9km in length, is the longest glacier in Austria and in the Eastern Alps. It lies in the valley below the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain. During the summer months, the glacier can be reached from the Grossglockner Pass by road. From Franz-Josefs-Höhe you can descend by the glacier railway, Gletscherbahn, towards the crevassed glacier surface. The effects of global warming are evident here as the railway originally terminated at the glacier’s surface. Bear in mind that at this elevation the climate is similar to the arctic so should you choose to visit the glacier be well prepared.
