The Pfarrkirche, with its Romanesque tower, dates from the 12th century. The building, which overlooks the town from the cliff face, was rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century and the upper part of the tower was added in the 18th century. In the southern choir there is the famous Marienaltar constructed about 1520 by the Meister Leonhard Astl. The altar’s iconography is based on the Seven Joys of Mary and encloses a shrine with relief figures of Saints Catherine and Barbara, the patron saints of wheelwrights and miners. During the religious upheavals of the 16th and 17th centuries the church alternated between Catholic and Protestant.
