The building of St. Stephens, with its 96 metre high Gothic tower, was begun in 1492 since which time there have been many additions and alterations. There is a 17th century clock in the tower which is surmounted by a Baroque onion dome. The church’s interior has fine vaulting and interesting columns with capitals in the shape of the heads of saints. The 15th century red marble tomb of Bishop Mauerkircher by Hans Valkenauer of Salzburg is of particular interest. Set in the exterior wall is the 16th century tombstone of the legendary Hans Staininger, a city governor, showing his long white beard which stretched to the floor.
