The Stephanskirche characteristic Romanesque towers date from around 1180 when the church was built after the previous wooden building had been burnt down by the Bohemian Duke Sobieslaw in 1176. The church was further developed in the 16th century and it was in 1515 that the magnificent Gothic stone pulpit was built featuring relief portraits of the church fathers, which is an outstanding example of the Eggenburg stone carvers art. There are also some wonderful Gothic frescos in the side-aisle; especially noteworthy is the representation of The Last Judgement.
