Ardagger Markt’s Pfarrkirche, which lies at an elevation of 275 metres and is approached by 123 steps from the village, is dedicated to Saint Nikolaus. The imposing south tower and the southern door attest to the church’s Gothic origins in the 14th and 15th centuries. The present building stands on the site of a much older church which is first recorded in 823. Internally there is still evidence of the building’s Romanesque origins. The delicate Rococo high altar, which boasts a painting of St. Nikolaus, is flanked by Baroque statues. The pulpit and many of the other pictures and statues are neo-Gothic.
