The elegant Baroque parish church of Gars, dating originally from 1387, began life as the Simonkapelle, surrounded by an ancient cemetery. The building was extended and remodelled in 1593 and a parsonage was added. During the course of the Thirty Years War, the church was badly damaged by fire in 1620 and remained in a ruined state for some years before being redeveloped in the Baroque style. Another disastrous fire in 1724 necessitated another rebuild which resulted in the structure much as it is today. Inside the church there is an outstanding painting by a pupil of Kremser Schmidt.
