The Romanesque and Gothic Marienkirche, also known as the Stephanskirche, was founded by King Stephen of Hungary around 1020 AD. The strange building stands on the Kirchenberg and consists of three structures which almost seem to belong to separate churches. There is an octagonal tower with Gothic gargoyles, a much less robust looking chancel and, between the two, the much older and plainer Romanesque nave. Adjacent to the church, there is a charnel house, or Beinhaus, which was constructed in the first quarter of the the 13th century.
