About one kilometre from the centre of Frankenfels is one of the most visited natural attractions of Austria’s Mostviertel, the Nixhöhle chalk caves. The caves were formed through the action of rock movement and folding and erosion by water. The cave system, which takes its name from the milky white rock layers, is full of wonderful sights, with descriptive names like the Madonna, the Cascade Falls and the Fairy Tale lakes. If you take one of the guided tours round this natural wonder, be sure to dress in warm clothing and wear appropriate footwear as the temperature is a constant 6 degrees Celsius.
