Gmünd is an important stop on the Waldviertler Schmalspurbahn, a 760 mm narrow gauge steam and diesel railway which is over one hundred years old. The railway runs 43 kilometres south to Groß Gerungs and 25 kilometres north to Litschau. There are long tunnels and two viaducts with a difference in track elevation of three hundred metres over the length of the line. The southern section is the most interesting as the train travels through characteristic rural scenery, stopping at Bruderndorf to refuel and take on water.
