Gold was discovered in the Gastein valley at least a thousand years ago but it wasn’t extracted systematically until much later, the the 14th century. The best years of production were between 1506 and 1558. The collections and exhibitions of the Montanmuseum, housed in the Salzstadl, a former barn in the village of Böcksten, are devoted to the history of the Gastein gold and silver mining industry. The museum contains historical items as well as gold ore processing plant from the 18th century which is used for live demonstrations. The machinery is located in the nearby Samerstall where you can also try your hand at gold washing.
