The church of Altböckstein is its predominant feature standing on a small hill in a position originally chosen by Archbishop Sigismund of Schrattenbach for a private mansion. The Archbishop ordered the church’s construction by the master builder Christian Glaner to a design by the architect Wolfgang Hagenauer. It was completed in 1766 with a beautiful ceiling fresco by the painter Johann Weiss, depicting Maria vom guten Rat von Genazzano. Today the church is a popular place of pilgrimage and is undoubtedly the most beautiful architectural monument in the Gastein valley.
