At the heart of Freistadt lies the Hauptplatz, a large square surrounded by merchant’s houses. The buildings are mainly Gothic in origin but have magnificent Renaissance and Baroque facades. In the centre of the square there is a Baroque Marian column and at the southern end is the Gothic parish church of St. Catherine. The square is used for markets, the oldest being the Paulimarkt which has been held here on the same feast day since the Middle Ages.
