Hainburg’s Hauptplatz became the town’s centre when the new parish church was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century. There are some notable buildings around the square and the Rococo Marian column, dating from 1749. The fountain at the centre of the square is perhaps the most interesting feature as it is dedicated to Josef Haydn. Haydn spent some of his schooldays in Hainburg, between 1737 and 1740. His grandfather, Thomas Haydn, was a native of the city and a survivor of the Turkish massacre on 1683. The parish church sports a fine 57 metre high tower designed by the famous Viennese architect Matthias Gerl.
