The Loretokirche in Göllersdorf, modelled after the ancient shrine of Loreto in Italy, dates from the years 1725 to 1730 and is the work of the famous Austrian master builder Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. It was originally the chapel of the early 17th century hospital founded by Hans Christoph II von Puchheim. Hildebrandt designed a late Baroque octagonal structure which is crowned by a star shaped dome. The frescos are by the Baroque artists Rudolf Byss and date from the year of the chapel’s dedication, 1730. The chapel suffered serious damage during the Napoleonic Wars when it was used to house Russian prisoners taken by the French.
