Hollabrunn’s Jewish cemetery, which can be found about a kilometre south of the town centre, dates from 1876 and contains about one hundred and forty graves. Although Jews have lived in Lower Austria for hundreds of years, it wasn’t until emancipation after 1867 that there was a substantial influx into the area. In 1901 a separate Jewish community was founded for Hollabrunn and the surrounding district, which by 1934 numbered about four hundred. There was a synagogue at the corner of Winiwarterstrasse and Straussgasse which remained in use until the Anschluss in 1938 when it was taken over by the municipality. By the end of that year all Jews were expelled from Hollabrunn.
