In 1844 Alexander Alexander Schöller and Hermann Krupp began the production of cutlery in Berndorf, employing fifty of the one hundred and eighty inhabitants of the village. Under Arthur Krupp, the company developed to employ 6,000 workers worldwide but the Krupp family’s roots remained in Berndorf. During the First World War, Arthur Krupp sponsored a wood carving factory, the Eiserne Bär on Idagasse, which specialised in “military bears “to help raise money for the war effort. The first bear was revealed on Emperor Franz Josef’s birthday, 18th August 1915
