The construction of Schloss Hoyos, intended as a replacement for the ancient Burg Gutenstein, was begun in 1670 by Johann Balthasar II of Hoyos. Over more than 330 years the castle was constantly extended and changed. Its basic classical form is the work of the 19th century Viennese architect Julius Deininger and is designed to compliment the beautiful English gardens. The castle is surrounded by exquisite parkland which is laid out in a natural rather than formal way with trees and bushes and a small lake.
