The Haus der Kunst was built in 1818 for the Russian ambassador Josef von Hudelist and remains today in its orginal form. When the supreme command of the imperial armies was moved to Baden in 1916, the building served the empire as a state meeting place. Oddly, the building was the precursor of the local casino as, shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, it housed a gambling salon which fell victim to the outbreak of war. Today the mansion is owned by the municipality and, as the “House of Art” is home to cultural meetings and major international exhibitions.
