The Late Baroque Schloss Heiligenkreuz in Gutenbrunn, which was later developed in the Rococo style, was built in 1738. The castle includes the parish and pilgrimage church of Mariä Himmelfahrt and was designed by Johann Ohmeyer. From 1964 to 2001 the buildings accommodated the Lower Austrian Baroque Museum and still contain many treasures from this period. The main staircase is finely stuccoed and the former castle chapel has wonderful frescos by Paul Troger, a frescoed dome and an altar piece by Franz Maulbertsch. There are paintings and other works of art by many of the finest Baroque artists; Rottmayer, Maulbertsch, Kremser Schmidt, Solimena and Altomonte.
