Schloss Heidenreichstein in the north west of the Waldviertel is Lower Austria’s largest mediaeval moated castle. This delightful 12th century castle was never conquered or devastated in its long history. The walls of the castle, which is entered via a drawbridge, are up to four metres thick in places. Guided tours are available to take visitors into the three story interior up the spiral staircase where there are exhibits of gothic furniture, tools and utensils and paintings from different periods. One of the most curious features of the building is the huge castle stove which reputedly takes three days to heat up.
