In its collections and exhibitions, the Welterbe-Museum charts the history of the area over the last 7000 years. Hallstadt was an important centre in prehistoric times as a result of the salt works. The topics covered are as diverse as geology, prehistoric salt mining, Celtic history, Roman history, the Middle Ages, religious persecution, natural history, arts and crafts and salt mining in modern times. There are many important archaeological finds including those from the excavation of a huge graveyard dating from as far back as the 8th century BC.
