The 13th century Burg Gutenstein is spectacularly situated on a steep cliff overlooking the Danube. The castle was built between 1195 and 1220 for the Babenberg Duke Leopold VI and was first documented in 1220. After the demise of the Babenberg line, the castle came into the hands of the Hapsburgs. Duke Friedrich I der Schöne was resident here and had a chapel built. By the early 16th century the castle had passed into the possession of the Hoyos family but gradually fell out of use until its abandonment in the 18th century. The imposing fortress has been preserved and is a popular attraction in the area.
