The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse is one of Europe’s highest and most scenic roads. The 48km route, which follows an ancient trade route linking Northern Italy and Germany, was constructed in the 1930’s under the direction of the engineer Franz Wallach as a job creation scheme. Because of the altitude at the highest part, 2600 metres, the road is only open between May and October and, indeed, may be impassable at certain times even during these months. There are many spectacular views, especially of the Grossglockner, along the way and roadside information is provided in the form of information booths and descriptive notices.
