The Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria at 3797 metres, is set in the wonderful Hohe Tauern National Park. The mountain actually consists of two peaks Großglockner and Kleinglockner, separated by a narrow section, the Glocknerscharte. The first attempts to scale Grossglockner were unsuccessful but the mountain finally succumbed to a huge expeditionary force in the early 19th century. Grossglockner can be appreciated more easily nowadays from the scenic highway Großglockner Hochalpenstraße between Heiligenblut and Fusch, but only between May and October unless you are a hardened Alpine mountaineer.
