Schloss Gloggnitz, overlooking the town, was once a Benedictine monastery and dates from the early 11th century, although it was subsequently remodelled in the Baroque style. The Gothic architecture is still evident in, for example, the castle defences, including the twin gate towers and the 14th century abbot’s chapel. The elongated south section of the complex dates from between 1588 and 1735 and once contained the abbot’s dwelling, refectory and prelature which boasts a fine fresco. There are two beautiful Baroque chapels and an abbey church which have fine frescos, paintings and statues.
