Gars is one of the original parishes of the Waldviertel and is documented the first time in 1135. The Gertrudskirche was originally a late Romanesque basilica, architectural evidence of which can still be seen. The church was subsequently extended by the addition of a tower in the 13th century and early Gothic circular windows, showing scenes from the life of John the Baptist and the church’s patron St. Gertrude of Nivelles, and porches in the 14th century. Inside there is fine net vaulting in the Johanneskapelle, a 17th century Baroque high altar and a magnificent Baroque organ.
