The Gate Tower is the last surviving tower of Brauau’s mediaeval fortifications, of which there were originally five. The tower is, in itself, an early 16th century replacement for an earlier structure destroyed during the War of Succession. The building was successively modified through the centuries to reflect changing tastes. For example, in 1675 a dome was added in the Baroque style but was replaced in the 19th century with neo-gothic castellations. Finally, in 19666, the tower was returned to its original state and a carillon was installed. Now it is used as exhibition space for a formation of artists called "Innviertler Künstlergilde".
