The ruins of Schloss Falkenstein don’t lie on a hill, like most castles, but in the remote forests of the Rannaschlucht on a steep rock. Although neighbouring hills are higher, at the time the castle was built in the 12th century there was no threat to it from long range weapons. In the Middle Ages, the castle was the most important aristocratic seat of the upper Muehlviertels. Later, in the 16th century, it was used a prison during the persecution of the Anabaptists. Most of the existing remains date from the 13th and 14th centuries and are heavily overgrown. The ruins are freely accessible although well hidden in the forest.
