The ruins of Burg Falkenstein lie to the north of Vienna, close to the Czech border. The ancient castle was built in 1050 by Emperor Henry III and it subsequently passed into the hands of the rulers of Austria, until, in 1572, it was sold off by the Emperor Maximilian II. Despite falling into the hands of the Swedish army towards the end of the Thirty Years War, it did not succumb to the fate of other similar strongholds and survived until the end of the 17th century when the owners moved out and allowed it to fall into decay. The castle is in a striking location and sufficient remains to show what an impressive fortress it must have been.
