Dating back to the 13th century, when it was a gothic fortress, this enormous palace became the property of the Esterházy family in 1649. Converted into Baroque and finally Neoclassical design, the ochre-yellow façade with green shutters dominates Esterházy-Platz. Guided tours take visitors through the rooms not now occupied by the provincial government and also the Esterházy Museum. The most impressive room is the Haydnsaal. It is considered to be amongst the most beautiful and acoustically perfect concert halls in the world. Take time to catch a concert where Haydn himself conducted numerous performances.
