The Jadgschloss Eckartsau is on the site of a much older moated castle dating at least from the 11th century. In the 18th century the castle was transformed into a Baroque hunting lodge and later in the same century was acquired by the royal family. A hundred years later it was renovated by Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Kaiser Karl, the last Austrian monarch lived here between 1918 and 1919 after which the castle passed into the hands of the state. The chateau, which is surrounded by beautiful parkland, was once again renovated after the Second World War and is now open to visitors.
