The ruins of Schloss Dürnstein are set in a commanding position on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city and the Danube. Its situation is so secure that it defied many sieges over its first five hundred years of history until 1645 when it succumbed to an attack by the Swedish Army and was destroyed. The castle is most famous as the prison of King Richard the Lionheart who was held here after capture by the Kuenringen in 1193. Today it is a popular place to visit because of the views over the Wachau.
