Substantial portions of Hainburg’s impressive ring wall fortifications have survived including a number of defensive towers the most famous of which is the Wienertor, which houses the local museum. The Romanesque Ungartor, which is pierced with defensive niches, is the oldest tower and dates from about 1230. The smaller Fischertor, which dates from much later and only accommodates foot traffic, was the scene of a terrible massacre during the second Turkish siege of 1683 when Hainburg was almost completely destroyed. As a result the lane leading to it is named Bludgasse.
