The Stadttheater was founded in 1897/1898 by Arthur Krupp to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the accession of Emperor Franz Josef I. The industrialist selected two of the most famous architects of the time to carry out the work, Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner. These two had already supervised the construction of nearly fifty theatres in Europe and Russia. The theatre is fronted by a large park with plane trees. The complex architecture is Viennese in style and the interior is set off by many fine frescos. On entering the auditorium, the visitor is transported into a graceful Rococo castle theatre which lifts the spirits.
