The history of the Stadttheater can be traced back to the year 1716. The original city theatre was abandoned in 1775 to be replaced in 1812 by a second theatre designed by the well known architect Josef Kornhaeusel and called “Das Hoftheater an der Schwechat”. Eventually, after a little short of one hundred years, this was replaced by the present theatre, the “Kaiser Jubiläums Stadttheater”, which was built by the famous theatre architects Fellner and Hellmer and handed over to the city in 1909. The theatre is the base of the Operetten Metropole Baden and specialises in operetta and musical comedy.
