The Stadtmuseum opened in 1913 and by the 1920s contained around 1200 exhibits. During the Second World War over ninety percent of the exhibits disappeared but the collection was rebuilt and was moved to its present location, the 13th century Ungar-Turm, in 1986. The museums collections, numbering more than 4500 exhibits, are organised into five different areas, in each of the five storeys of the tower; prehistory and Roman finds, history and cultural development of the city, weapons from different epochs, uniforms and crafts and rural culture.
